IN A NUTSHELL

This division is aimed at learners who were previously in a Prevocational Department at primary school, those with learning disabilities who cannot cope in the main stream academics.

The duration of secondary schooling for these learners is approximately 4 years and commences in the learner’s fifteenth year. During the first year, learners are familiarised with practical skills. This allows them to make informed decisions on which practical subjects they need for their schooling career. They are also exposed to life in high school which offers them the opportunity to develop the self-confidence needed to orientate them for their high school career.

From Year 1 learners are introduced to subject choices. This is necessary in establishing the essential concept of a smooth transition from Special Education to Further Education and Training in an EFT College.

OPEN DAY

The Prevocational Department of Suid Natal High School holds an annual open day for Potential Learners, Parents, Teachers, Principals of other schools, Counsellors, Rotarians and other interested members of public. Here they are informed about the Prevocational Department and how learners are integrated with the main stream learners of Suid Natal High School on other levels. Suid Natal High School is the only high school in the Country with a Prevocational Department.

The learners are not only taught to apply basic skills, but also to recognise and use the correct terminology which enables them to further their career at any FET College.

As many periods as possible are assigned to practical subjects.

The Prevocational Department is relatively small and accommodates both Afrikaans and English learners, who are taught on a dual medium level in both languages.

The relatively small size of this department allows the learners the advantage of receiving individual attention and the opportunity to have every educator get to know them personally.

Educators are available for guidance at all times.

Academically this department functions separately from the main stream, but in all other areas they form an integral part of the school, with the same uniform.
