With the implementation of CAPS, there are no more subject choices and all the subjects are incorporated into the following compulsory learning areas:
- Languages (Afrikaans, English);
- Natural science;
- Economic and Management Sciences;
- Human and Social Sciences;
- Mathematics;
- Technology;
- Life Orientation;
- Creative Arts.

Continuous assessment term 1 – 3 makes up 40% of the yearly marks while the end-of-year exam makes up 60%.
- GRADE 10 – 12 SUBJECT PACKAGES
For the National Senior Certificate (NSC), all learners must offer 7 subjects consisting of four compulsory subjects and 3 choice subjects. A learner’s SUBJECT PACKAGE will therefore consist of:
2.a. Four compulsory subjects:
Afrikaans Home language;
English 1st Additional language;
Life Orientation;
Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
2.b. Three choice subjects – one subject chosen from each of the following
columns:

PASS REQUIREMENTS AND ADMISSION TO TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS
NOTE: Life Orientation is a subject that will be examined internally in Gr 12
and is known as a 10-credit subject
All other subjects are examined externally in Gr 12 and are known as 20-credit subjects
A learner can pass in 3 ways, namely:
1 NSC Basic [NSC : National Senior Certificate)
2 NSC with admission to Diploma studies
3 NSC with admission to Degree studies
